- I’ve lived in Maine my whole life so the surroundings of UNE seem normal to me. But one of the things that did surprise me is how bad the parking is. At marcil hall everyone parks so crooked and makes it so i can’t fit my car in the lot. Another thing that surprised me is how much homework college gives. I knew I would be getting more than highschool bu this is crazy. Like I said before, the scenery seems normal to me. I’m used to the beautiful landscapes. I usually only drive back roads to get places. And how hard it is to make friends. Since I commute everyone seems to already have friend groups. I also love the dance team.
2. This weekend was pretty great. The first football game happened and I got to perform. I loved getting to do the halftime show. The downside was that the game was so hot. EVeryone got burnt but I put sunscreen on so I was set. It was really fun to get ready before the game. It was really fun at the start but towards the end I was really hot and dehydrated. Also the music they played for our sidelines was weird and did not match any of our dances which made it awkward at times. After the game I went out to eat with my friend and my papa. It was a really great..but long day. I cant wait for the next performance day, which sadly isnt till october 2nd.
3. Today’s free write is about social media. I am guilty of using a lot of social media. I have had social media since I was very young. I had access to my ipad which I got from instagram. I always have had it as a fun thing to look at. I would post silly things, which I would later regret because I was like 11. Right now what I use the most is snapchat and tiktok. Tiktok is probably my favorite app that I use. It’s so fun to scroll through for hours. Tiktok is so funny. It shows you videos other people make and they become catered to you. I could sit on this app for hours, which I am guilty of. It doesnt give me much benefit except it keeps me not bored. Snap chat is how I talk to my friends mostly. It’s my main source of communication. I don’t really text unless it’s my family or I’m being urgent. You send pictures of things through snapchat to people as a way of talking. It probably isn’t the best thing for you but I still love it. It also gives you funny filters you can put on and send people. At UNE everyone uses social media. Well not everyone but most people. You look up people’s names on instagram to see more about them and what they like. The first thing you do when you talk to people is ask for their snapchat so you can talk. It’s weird but it’s what happens. I believe a lot of social media has a negative impact. Like instagram you compare yourself to people and wonder why you dont look like that. But some aspects are great, like tik tok is so funny and i love it and snapchat i love it.
4. Konnikova argues that social media can’t replicate the feeling of being with someone. In the essay she states “ until social media can replicate that touch, it can’t fully replicate social bonding”( Konnikova 258.) This quote speaks so loud because it’s true. You simply cannot get the same feelings on social media that you get when you’re with this person.
5. My process started with me stressing out that I should’ve started it earlier. Last night I sat down at 9pm and busted it out. It definitely wasn’t fun but I got it done. When I draft I always try to go in order of what the paragraphs are going to be. They end up changing but how I want them in the start. I definitely wished I could start earlier but for some reason my mind won’t work unless I’m under pressure. I looked through my notes to find ideas I had so that definitely helped my process. I still have to go through and find some quotes for sections of my essay that I didn’t have time to find.
In the introduction I believe it is a way to start a paper off strong. You want to think of the introduction as a way to bring information outside of what you are writing about. You could bring facts into this. This is also a way to introduce your thesis statement which will carry the topics for the rest of your paper. The conclusion wraps up everything you talked about above. You recite in short sentences the topics of each paragraph you talked about above (usually)
6. This paper was a pretty normal task. I felt it was a pretty easy paper to write considering I read the passages and have done all the homework connected. I understood where I was coming from and both of the passages. Going about writing my rough draft, I felt I had a pretty good rough draft so revising it was pretty simple. Finding evidence was also a pretty simple task for me and I really like the quotes that I found. My peers really gave me good advice to fix my draft which pulled everything together. In my senior year I had to write a 10 page paper so this was pretty normal and I felt the topic was interesting. The readings were definitely college level so I think understanding some of the reading was the hard part. Peer review was intimidating at first but once you warm up it becomes a lot less scary.
